Apple's first foldable iPhone opens for pre-order on 16 October from $1,999. Its screens, A20 Pro chip, battery claims, thickness and the eSIM-only catch.

Apple's first foldable phone goes on pre-order on Friday 16 October 2026 and reaches shops in more than 70 countries on 23 October. The iPhone Duo opens like a book into a 7.6-inch screen, closes into a short, wide 5.4-inch phone, and starts at $1,999.

Apple waited years while others refined the format, so the interesting question is what it chose to do differently. The full specification sheet is on the iPhone Duo page on Nestphones.

A passport, not a remote control

Most book-style foldables have a tall, narrow outer screen. Apple went the other way: closed, the iPhone Duo is 84.1 mm wide and only 117.8 mm tall, close to the shape of a passport. Open, it becomes a near-square 7.6-inch tablet just 5.2 mm thin. The figures below come from Apple's official specifications.

Feature iPhone Duo
Inner screen 7.6-inch OLED, 1878 × 2670, 120 Hz, matte nano-texture finish
Outer screen 5.4-inch OLED, 1398 × 2034, 120 Hz
Brightness 1,000 nits typical, 1,600 nits HDR, 3,000 nits peak outdoors
Chip A20 Pro (2 nm), with Apple's own C2 modem
Rear cameras 48 MP main + 48 MP ultrawide
Front cameras 12 MP on the outer screen, under-display camera on the inner screen
Unlocking Touch ID in the side button
Thickness and weight 11.3 mm folded, 5.2 mm open, 254 g
Water resistance IP68 (up to 6 m for 30 minutes)
Storage 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB
Software iOS 27.1

Two points are easy to miss. The "2x telephoto" Apple lists is a 12 MP crop of the main sensor, not a separate lens, so there are only two cameras on the back. And there is no Face ID: the phone unlocks with a fingerprint reader in the side button. On the software side, iOS 27.1 brings Split View to the iPhone for the first time, along with two windows of the same app and saved app pairs.

Performance: Apple's claims for the A20 Pro

The iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple says it is up to 20% faster on the processor and up to 40% faster on graphics than the A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Pro.

A20 Pro vs A19 Pro, according to Apple (A19 Pro = 100)
  • CPU: A19 Pro100
  • CPU: A20 Pro120
  • Graphics: A19 Pro100
  • Graphics: A20 Pro140

"Up to" figures published by Apple, September 2026. Not Nestphones measurements.

Apple also promises up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, helped by a new vapour chamber, which matters in a thin, folding body that has less room to shed heat. Independent tests on retail units will only appear after 23 October, so treat these as the manufacturer's best-case numbers.

Battery: two cells, no capacity given

The battery is split into two cells, one in each half. Apple does not publish the capacity in mAh and no teardown exists yet, so any figure circulating online is unconfirmed. What Apple does give is endurance from its own tests on pre-production units:

Apple's battery life claims, in hours
  • Video playback, outer screen44 h
  • Streamed video, outer screen37 h
  • Video playback, inner screen31 h
  • Streamed video, inner screen26 h
  • Mixed use, both screens24 h

Apple's lab figures, tested in August 2026. Real use depends on brightness, network and apps.

The pattern is logical: the bigger the screen you use, the shorter the battery life. Charging reaches 50% in about 20 minutes with an adapter of 60 W or more (none in the box), and MagSafe goes up to 25 W.

Thicker and heavier than its rivals

That passport shape has a cost. Folded, the iPhone Duo is noticeably thicker than the two main Android foldables on sale, according to each manufacturer's own specifications.

Thickness when folded (lower is thinner)
  • iPhone Duo11.3 mm
  • Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold10.1 mm
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra8.9 mm

Manufacturer specifications checked on 14 October 2026.

It is heavier too: 254 g, against 239 g for the Pixel 11 Pro Fold and 215 g for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, and its 7.6-inch inner screen is smaller than their 8-inch panels. In return, the wider outer screen should feel much more like a normal phone when closed. Our iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra comparison puts them side by side.

Price

Storage United States France
256 GB $1,999 €2,339
512 GB $2,199 €2,589
1 TB $2,599 €3,089
2 TB $3,199 €3,839

US prices exclude sales tax; French prices include VAT. In the UK the iPhone Duo starts at £1,999, and in the UAE at AED 8,499.

eSIM only, everywhere

The iPhone Duo has no SIM card slot in any country, China included: Apple's spec sheet says it is "not compatible with physical SIM cards". Before ordering, check that your carrier offers eSIM. In Algeria, for example, no operator offers it to consumers yet, so the Duo cannot take a local line there.

Who should buy it

The iPhone Duo is for people who want a compact phone and a small-tablet screen in one device, and who are happy to pay for a first generation. If thinness, the biggest inner screen or a lower price matter more, the Android foldables are still ahead on paper. Everyone else can wait for the first independent battery and durability tests after 23 October.

Would you trade a thicker phone for that passport shape, or wait for the second generation?
